Cyberspace Relationships: Who Are You Really Dating

Internet

Over the years with the introduction of internet in most people’s homes browsing dating sites and even networking sites like Facebook and Myspace have given some people the courage to step out of their shell and meet people. The internet has enabled people to get past the initial awkwardness that meeting someone face to face entails and allows people to jump straight into a friendly and knowledgeable relationship. Meeting someone online enables a person to skip past all the polite pleasantries that we find ourselves engaging in when we first meet someone in order to gain their trust and interest in you.

People find that having a relationship with someone online may give them the chance that they may not have been given if they had initially met the individual in person. You see the thing is for many people they lack self-confidence and being able to meet someone without having to expose their appearance gives them that sense of security to let their true self shine through and the other person to get to know them for their personality rather than looks. Having said this, cyberspace is becoming one of the most common causes of bullying and sexual harassment. You may think it’s as easy as just disconnecting your internet connection but after you’ve begun to trust someone online with your personal details and information about you then how much can you really distance yourself from this person you’ve come to know.

Research shows that around 35% of online relationships when met with physical meeting and interaction will dwindle out and the other person will find some way to avoid them if they are not what they had expected. So why do people then continue to live in this world of make believe and fantasy where people can be anyone they want to be. Well that’s exactly it, online you can be anyone you want to be, right down to the colour hair and eyes you have. For many people having the internet works as a social life as they lack the confidence to actually meet people in person.

So what happened to the good old days when people used to go out for drinks with their girlfriends just for that maybe chance they meet a good looking guy and hit it off? Well I have to say that even though many people are keeping their social lives online there is still a large majority of people who prefer to not hold online social accounts and go out and meet people in the flesh.

So which do you prefer, would you rather meet someone online while you’re at home in your pyjamas or would you rather pull out your best dress, get all dolled up and see what a night out on the town has in store for you?
