How To Quit Smoking Forever

Deciding to quit smoking may be one of the hardest things to do but once you set your mind to it, you will find that half the battle is won.

It should firstly be understood that Cigarettes contain nicotine and carbon monoxide, which are some of the most dangerous toxic gases and chemicals inhaled in tobacco smoke. You may not be aware but when you inhale nicotine, you get high blood pressure, increased heart rate and reduced blood flow.

Cigarette smoking also is the most significant cause of lung cancer. Followed by cancer of the larynx, oesophagus and the mouth. When you smoke, you also increase your chances of getting a stroke or a heart attack.
Here are some tips to help you decide to quit and then actually quit:

  • Prepare yourself for a challenge. No one ever said that it was going to be easy but with a little bit of perseverance, you will do it
  • Set yourself a date, a date that you would like to start either reducing the amount of cigarettes you will have or even the day when you will start to go cold turkey, it’s up to you, remember though not to be too tough on yourself
  • Get yourself some literature on how to quit smoking, what to expect so that you have a realistic approach to it.
  • Remove anything smoke related from your home, empty cigarette cartons, ashtrays, butt buckets, anything that may draw you back in.
  • Air your house out, using deodorisers or just let some fresh air through. You may not realise it but cigarette smoke tends to linger in your home
  • If you feel that you may not be able to do it alone, get a friend involved, quit smoking together, that way you can support each other

Below are some benefits you will feel from quitting smoking as soon as after one day

  • Your heart rate and blood pressure will drop
  • Your sense of smell and taste will improve
  • Walking and other exercises will be much easier as your circulation and breathing would have improved
  • Shortness of breath and coughing will decrease, overall energy levels will increase
  • There will be a decline in the risk of bronchitis and pneumonia
  • Your risk of suffering from a stroke will be the same as a non-smoker’s after five years.
